Learn how to make baked cinnamon apple chips using fresh apples and a little bit of cinnamon and sugar. Homemade baked apple chips are fun to make, a great way to use up apples, and are a healthy snack!
Apple chips are one of my favorite things to make in Fall right after a trip the apple orchard. It’s amazing how a little trip to the oven can transform a juicy apple into a crunchy chip. And while there are many ways to make apple chips using fancy dehydrators, this easy recipe can be made in the oven on a crisp Fall day when you don’t mind having the oven turned on for a few hours.
What Do You Need to Make Homemade Apple Chips?
Apples, Cinnamon, Sugar, a knife, baking sheet, and a oven! Seriously it doesn’t get easier than that. What I love about homemade apple chips is that you know exactly what you’re getting – no mystery ingredients or preservatives that you mind find on packaged version.
How Thin Should I Cut Apple Chips?
I recommend cutting them as thin as you can, around 1/8″. While cutting, leave the skin on.
If you have a mandolin slicer, I recommend using the thin blade setting to slice the apples. Otherwise, cutting them thin with a sharp knife will work just as well. It may just take a few extra minutes & a little extra caution (watch the fingers), but it will get the job done. The thinner you’re able to slice the apples, the crunchier the chips will be. After slicing, spread them into a thin layer on a parchment covered baking sheet, sprinkle them with cinnamon/sugar, and pop in the oven for a few hours.
How to Bake Apple Chips
After cutting the apple slices, place them on a parchment covered baking sheet. Try to arrange them so that they are spread out as one layer (if some overlap, that’s okay). mix together cinnamon and sugar and sprinkle over one side of the apples.
How long will apple chips last?
For optimal crunch, I recommend eating within 2-3 days but they can be stored in a airtight container for up to 1 week.

Your house will never smell as heavenly as it did when these delicious apple chips are baking. I’ve actually considered foregoing purchasing any more candles, and just popping in a batch of apple chips every evening to aromatize the place. Besides, you can’t eat candles after 3 hours goes by BUT you can eat apple chips after 3 hours in the oven and to me, that is reason enough. So what I’m trying to say is that apple chips are basically like edible candles.

I made these with 1 green apple (bought a couple weeks ago) and 3 red delicious apples (bought and used the same day). Only the green apple crisped up nicely. The red delicious apples would not lose their moisture. Oh well, at least I had some of these absolutely delicious treats to eat! Can’t wait to make more :)
Melissa says
That’s interesting! I’ve used red delicious before and never had that problem. Sounds like you may have had extra juicy apples! For next time, it may be worth trying to bake them separately when using different kinds of apples. I’ve definitely had some apples take extra time, so it may be worth leaving the red delicious in the oven longer than you would the green ones!
Tiffany says
Do they turn wavy like that on their own?
Melissa says
Yes they do! The thinner you cut them, the wavier they will be.

Love the idea. Wonder if you could use splenda instead of sugar though?
Melissa says
It would be worth a shot! I can’t say for certain how they will turn out since I haven’t tried it, but I’d guess that Splenda would work just fine. If you do end up trying it, please report back on how it worked!

Awesome! Thanks for reporting back on how they turned out!

I won’t complain if 5 bags of these just happen to show up on my doorstep. Or I guess I could make them.

Yum! It’s truly not fall until there are apples with cinnamon and sugar yumminess!
Melissa says
That’s so true. The smell of cinnamon is a necessity every fall!

Ooh I have a load of cooking apples, and there are only so many crumbles I can do with them. These are a perfect alternative, and I wouldn’t feel guilty eating these ;)
Melissa says
Yes, that’s my favorite thing about them! They are sweet treat that I don’t have to feel guilty about when I happen to eat the whole bag.

These are a serious childhood throw back for me! We definitely made the 90’s version of these in Girl Scouts! I will definitely have to make them this fall!!!
Melissa says
Ahh girl scouts! Good times. Except we never got to make apple chips! They just stuck us in tents during tornado warnings (true story). I’m still a little bitter about that night…
Ursula says
Yes!!! This recipe is right on time. My toddler will devour these.
Melissa says
Woot! I never thought of apple chips as a kid food, but they’d be perfect!
Niki says
I used to make these when I was in high school (although I’m sure yours are much better)! Your photos are amazing, and you’re making me want to re-try this recipe!
Melissa says
You must! They are so easy & seriously smell SO good.
Evadney Laing says
Making thes apple chips sounds great but the time it takes to bake them is just tooo long-I think. All my gas would be used up by the Time th’er done.
Melissa says
I agree, they do take a long time to bake! There may be a quicker method with a dehydrator, but I haven’t looked into it as I only make these once or twice a year during apple season.
