I use Dropbox, Adobe Creative Cloud and PayPal from this list. However, thanks for listing out the other inexpensive tools :). Very helpful! I have shared this post on Pinterest.

Basecamp is my absolute fave. You should check out CudaSign for sending and signing documents electronically, it’s only $1/month instead of $15!

Hi Megan! I personally use Illustrator for things like invites because it allows me to create vectors files and illustrations. Either Indesign or Illustrator would work for this type of thing, it just comes down to what program you are most fluent in. I am just the quickest & most comfortable in Illustrator, so that’s what I use. Indesign is great for projects with a lot of text to format and typeset. I also know people who design purely in Photoshop, I just find it most efficient to use Illustrator since I can draw the illustrations directly in the design file rather than having to transfer them to a different program. Hope this helps!

I’m in the works of starting my own VERY small business in custom stationary and invitations. I’ve researched a lot about the best software to use for images, backgrounds and fonts to design my products. To me it seems as though the BEST options are Adobe Illustrator and InDesign. Since I really won’t be working with photos, are these the best two programs you would suggest also? I would love your input and any recommendations you have on getting started.
Thanks!

Hi Melissa! Glad you found this useful. Upgrading my Dropbox has been a lifesaver as I’ve had two hard drives crash in the past few years, which weren’t able to be recovered! My business became way more organized when I finally figured out a way to implement it into my workflow and I since then, I haven’t turned back! Good luck transferring all those photos (I need to do the same with bunch on my old computer!).

I have never heard of Basecamp or EchoSign but love both! Saving them and I just got an email from Dropbox that I’m almost out of space.

It’s funny, because I’ve never looked into upgrading the account. I have 2 old hard drives that aren’t truly compatible with my mac (I started on a PC eons ago) and now my imac is SO.SLOW. because it’s bombarded with photos for hte past 5+ years.

I’m adding to my list to upgrade and then MOVE all those photos over there! Thank you :)

Thanks, Jamie! I haven’t had any resistance with Basecamp, but I can definitely see how someone who is used to communicating solely through email or phone may find it hard to adjust to a new workflow.

I LOVED Basecamp at my last job. Do you find that clients are responsive to using it? We had some difficulties with people willing to communicate through Basecamp, but it was an in-house job, so I know there are definite differences.
